Absorbed radiation doses due to chronic ingestion of cesium-137 or strontium-90 by mice

چکیده
The knowledge of the absorbed radiation dose is essential in order to interpret the results of animal experiments with chronic ingestion of radionuclides by rodents. In order to evaluate this absorbed dose, we applied the dose conversion factors proposed by ICRP publication 108 to mouse chronic ingestion experiments with 20 kBq.L-1 137Csor 90Sr-contaminated water. The results indicated that wholebody absorbed doses were 9mGy and 10mGy by the end of 20 weeks of 137Cs or 90Sr ingestion, respectively. These results of dose calculations were compared with results obtained with a more refined method using published organ-specific absorbed fractions of energy. There was good agreement between the two methods, indicating that, despite the simple hypotheses used to apply the ICRP 108 dose conversion factors to our mouse model, this method allows one to calculate in a simple and reliable way the absorbed radiation dose received by the rodents during long-term experiments on chronic ingestion of radionuclides.

Despite considerable research into the environmental risks and biological effects of exposure to external beam γ rays, incorporation of radionuclides has largely been understudied. This dosimetry and exposure risk assessment is challenging for first responders in the field during a nuclear or radiological event. Therefore, we have developed a workflow for assessing injury responses in easily ob...

With the safety of existing nuclear power plants being brought into question after the Fukushima disaster and the increased level of concern over terrorism-sponsored use of improvised nuclear devices, it is more crucial to develop well-defined radiation injury markers in easily accessible biofluids to help emergency-responders with injury assessment during patient triage. Here, we focused on ut...

In the event of a dirty bomb scenario or an industrial nuclear accident, a significant dose of volatile radionuclides such as 137Cs and 90Sr may be dispersed into the atmosphere as a component of fallout and inhaled or ingested by hundreds and thousands of people. To study the effects of prolonged exposure to ingested radionuclides, we have performed long-term (30 day) internal-emitter mouse ir...

In March 2011, enormous radioactive materials, mainly 137Cs, 129I, 90Sr and so on were released from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after The Great East Japan Earthquake. Tap water, raw milk, vegetables, mushrooms, fruit, nuts, seaweed, marine invertebrates, fish, beef, wild animal meat, brown rice, wheat, tea leaves and other foodstuffs were contaminated by many radionuclides. In pa...

INTRODUCTION The need for retrospective assessments of the internal doses received by members of the public as a result of large environmental releases of radionuclides arose in connection with the atmospheric nuclear weapons tests conducted in the 1950s and 1960s as well as with major radiation accidents. The assessment of the internal exposure is greatly facilitated when measurements of the r...
